Bill Belichick's time in New England might be coming to a close at the end of this season. And Devin McCourty spoke his mind when asked about this possibility during his weekly appearance on The Greg Hill Show on WEEI.
McCourty was asked about who the next coach of the New England Patriots will be, and the former captain didn't hesitate.
"I think it'll be Coach Belichick."
"I think that should happen," McCourty said. "I think there are other things that they can do to fix the issues that they've had, but I also believe that this team needs to build over time."
ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky shared on Monday that he has heard that it Belichick and the Patriots will likely part ways at the end of the season, with the long-time coach going to another team. And according to Orlovsky, that team has already been decided.
This went along with The Athletic's Dianna Russini report that she had talked to some people that believe Belichick and the Patriots could agree on a mutual parting of ways after the season.
Many people have blamed Belichick, calling for his job due to the Patriots poor record this season. However, they seem to forget the six Super Bowl championships he helped bring to New England.
But because the fans want to see results, they want to see some major changes.
"As fans and supporters, we want to see the team win right away. They're going to have money in free agency so everybody's going to want to see them go sign all of these players. Like they did that before in 2021," McCourty said while also explaining what he thinks the team should do instead. "I think they need to identify a player or two in free agency that they say 'this guy is the guy we're going to get.' I think preferably some offensive weapon or receiver."
The Patriots have a lot of decisions to make, but it will start with what to do about Belichick. And maybe they will take McCourty's opinion into account.
Is it time for Patriots to move on from Bill Belichick? I think not
It shouldn’t be over yet.
