The New England Patriots were expected to move around on the second and third day of the 2024 NFL Draft, and they wasted no time.
Holding the second pick in the second round, the Patriots traded pick No. 34 along with a fifth-round pick (137th) in exchange for the 37th overall pick along with a fourth-round selection (110th).
It was reported prior to the start of the second day that teams were calling those with early picks in the second round to try and move up, and it was the Patriots who were willing to budge.
Grading the Patriots trade
- Patriots get: 37th overall pick, 4th-round pick (110th)
- Chargers get: 34th overall pick, 5th round pick (137th)
Patriots Grade: A-
Per the Rich Hill trade chart, this was a completely even trade.
The Patriots missed out on Georgia WR Ladd McConkey, who was taken by the Chargers. And when the Patriots were back on the clock, Texas star receiver Adonai Mitchell was still available.
However, when they were up three picks later, they didn't take Mitchell and instead went with Washington receiver Ja'Lynn Polk.
So they get a new weapon for Drake Maye, while also getting an additional pick in the fourth-round in exchange for a much later fifth-round pick.
With this decision, it seems that Florida WR Keon Coleman was the guy the Patriots really wanted, and when he went off the board the pick before they were on the clock, they decided to trade back.
So all in all, it seems like the trade worked out exactly as they wanted it to.
