The New England Patriots made the decision to cut ties with one of their veteran players on the eve of the 2025 regular season when they released safety Jabrill Peppers. Peppers, who was a multi-year starter with New England but was a holdover from before the Mike Vrabel era, was ushered out to make room for some of the youngsters in New England’s secondary.

After being released, Peppers has taken his time picking his next destination — but he’s made his choice. And it won’t be long before Peppers is back in Foxborough and wearing someone else’s colors.

He’s reportedly signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Peppers lands in Pittsburgh to add some more safety depth to a loaded secondary. Between Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr., Darius Slay, DeShon Elliott, Chuck Clark, and Juan Thornhill, Peppers will be stepping into a unit with a lot of experience and success. And he’ll also be stepping into Gillette Stadium in less than two weeks.

The Patriots play their AFC East rival, the Miami Dolphins, in South Florida this Sunday before returning home to host Peppers and the rest of his new teammates in Week 3. What kind of role he’s able to earn by that stage will be a fun subplot for a measuring stick opportunity for the Patriots. Pittsburgh as some big aspirations in 2025, whereas the Patriots are trying to build a foundation to compete with for years to come.

Peppers could see the field thanks to an injury to Elliott — but the ability to prep to play in a whole new system will be a challenge. It took Peppers a while, but he does finally land on his feet. And it’s probably safe to say he’s chomping at the bit to come back to town and make a few plays.
