Hyattsville, MD – Jacoby Brissett's time on the field during the New England Patriots final preseason game on Sunday night was very limited.
The plan was for the veteran to just get one or two drives. But after one, head coach Jerod Mayo made the decision to take him out.
However, it might not have been all because he made that comment pregame. There might have been another factor that kept him from getting a second chance.
The offensive line is having their worst performance of the preseason, and their poor play actually showed why the team might be taking things slow with rookie quarterback Drake Maye.
On one play Brissett had absolutely no time in the pocket and was knocked to the ground immediately by Commanders DE K.J. Henry.
After the play, the quarterback stood up and was seen in clear discomfort. But he did stay in to finish the drive that resulted in a punt.
However, when it was the Patriots turn with the ball again, they sent out Maye.
And during the second quarter, New England officially listed Brissett as questionable to return with a shoulder injury.
Maye had a promising performance in his first drive, scrambling up the field for 17 yards on 3rd and 14. He then hit fellow rookie Ja'Lynn Polk for 29 yards and followed it up with a 16 yard completion to DeMario Douglas. The drive ended with a 18 yard play to running back Kevin Harris for the touchdown.
The following four drives were not as successful, all ending with a punt. But Maye played very solid considering the atrocious performance from the offensive line.
And this could also be why the Patriots have been so hesitant to name Maye the starter.
They don't want to risk him getting hurt. And Brissett is now a prime example of that.
In the first half, the line recorded eight penalties and had two bad snaps. Oh and not to mention, they also stepped on Maye's shoe at one point. But don't worry, he still completed the pass.
Here is the full list of penalties from the first half:
LT Chukwuma Okorafor: illegal formation, illegal formation, illegal formation
LG Sidy Sow: holding
RG Layden Robinson: false start, holding
RT Mike Onwenu: illegal formation
