It seems one New England Patriots coach is coming under fire for his decision in the past. And it relates to one of the top storylines this season for the Patriots.

Speaking with the media prior to the Rose Bowl game in Los Angeles, Alabama's Jalen Milroe talked about all the doubts he heard about his future as a quarterback. And Bill O'Brien was one of those people who was very outspoken about this.

"Shoot, my own offensive coordinator, Bill O'Brien, told me I shouldn't play quarterback," Milroe said. "There's a lot of things I can have motivation on and that is something I have motivation from."

Milroe was then asked his reaction to hear that.

"How would you feel if I told you (that) you sucked," he asked and the reporter responded that they wouldn't like it. "That's exactly how I felt."

Yet despite it all, Milroe has led his team to the College Football Playoffs, also finishing sixth in Heisman Trophy voting.

O'Brien served as the offensive coordinator at Alabama for two seasons in 2021 and 2022. During both of those, Milroe served as the backup to Bryce Young, who left at the end of the 2022 season and entered the NFL Draft. However, when it was Milroe's time to shine as the starter, O'Brien returned to the NFL, joining the Patriots coaching staff again as the offensive coordinator.

And something very similar happened shortly after he got to Foxborough. The connections between the Milroe situation and the Malik Cunningham situation are just too strong.

Cunningham was signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent, proving himself during the preseason. While he played quarterback at Louisville, New England were determined to use him as a wide receiver.

And despite his strong performance in preseason at quarterback, they refused to give him a chance during the regular season despite the consistent quarterback troubles.

Cunningham remained on the practice squad, but was eventually signed by the Baltimore Ravens, reuniting with fellow Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson. He received a lot of well wished from his Patriots teammates, with one telling A to Z exclusively that now Cunningham had a "real chance to play his real position."

So similar to Cunningham's current opportunity with the Ravens, Milroe made sure to highlight where he has now led the team.

"He told me a bunch of positions I could have switched to but look where I'm at right now," Milroe said. "So who gets the last laugh?"
