When Mac Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, he knew it was a fresh start.

His time with the New England Patriots was very tumultuous. Jones had a promising rookie season, but took a serious decline his second and third year. And because of that, many knew that his time in New England came to an end when former head coach Bill Belichick decided to officially bench the quarterback in favor of Bailey Zappe during the 2023 season.

So, he went to the Jaguars as a backup quarterback. But now, he's getting a chance to start.

Jacksonville announced on Wednesday that they have placed starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence on injured reserve, most likely meaning that his season is over. And that means Jones will now serve as the starter for the remaining five games.

While no one ever wants their teammate to get injured, Jones will become a free agent after the 2024 season. So, if he wants to show other teams what he can do, this is the perfect time.

When Jones replaced Lawrence in Sunday's loss to the Houston Texans, he went 20-of-32 for 235 yards and two touchdowns. And he brought the Jaguars within three points.

It was a promising performance, and now he can build off that.

Plus, he had a very solid preseason, where he recorded three touchdowns along with 421 passing yards for a 72.2 completions percentage across the three games.

There are plenty of teams that might be looking for a quarterback next season, so maybe Jones can show everyone why he was a first round pick back in 2021.
