FOXBOROUGH, Mass – The New England Patriots brought in a new quarterback on Wednesday morning, and it's one Mac Jones is already familiar with.

Ian Book was signed to the practice squad by the Patriots after a successful workout, filling Bailey Zappe's spot after he was signed to the 53-man roster.

"Ian and I played against each other in college," Jones said on Wednesday. "He’s a great quarterback and we’re excited to have him in our room.”

Book, who played college ball for Notre Dame, and Jones, who was at Alabama, bother entered the league at the same time as a part of the 2021 Draft Class. Because of that, Jones was asked if he got to know the new Patriots quarterback during that time.

"Ya a little bit. It was different because of COVID and stuff like that, but yeah, I thought he was really good in college and obviously glad to have him here," Jones said. "I feel like the quarterback room needs to work together to help the team win, so hopefully we can do that."

The Patriots were in need of another quarterback on the roster after they placed Matt Corral on the reserve/left squad list. This meant that he was removed from the Patriots 53-man roster, but cannot sign with another team. The Patriots can choose to activate him, but they would first have to clear a roster spot.

Book worked out with the 49ers earlier this week after spending the offseason with the Eagles. He was claimed by Philadelphia on Aug. 31 2022, but was waived just under a year later.

The quarterback's NFL career began in 2021 when he was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round. He started in one game that season, going 12-20 for 135 yards and two interceptions. However, he was then waived by the team in Aug. 2022.

While Bailey Zappe's spot as the backup to Jones seems set for now, training camp and cutdown day proved that anything can happen so we'll see if Book is able to fight his way onto the active roster.
