Mike Vrabel’s biggest strength shined during free agency and it has the Patriots on track for a Super Bowl return
The Patriots are coming off another strong free agency run thanks to Vrabel’s eye for talent.
It’s hard enough to make it to the Super Bowl, let alone make it back there after a tough loss.
Yet, that’s exactly where the New England Patriots find themselves heading into the 2026 season. As it turns out, the moves they made in free agency are effective enough to keep them on track for another Super Bowl appearance after last year’s brutal loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
And it’s all thanks to Mike Vrabel’s eye for talent, as ESPN’s Ben Solak notes below:
“I loved the value plays. The Patriots are taking high-upside swings without paying big salaries. [Romeo] Doubs is being paid like an every-down WR2 but might have a higher ceiling as a WR1 now that he’s out of Green Bay’s spread-the-wealth offense; he certainly doesn’t prevent the Patriots from continuing their pursuit of A.J. Brown. [Alijah] Vera-Tucker got a bigger financial commitment than I expected, but he was nearly an All-Pro talent at guard with the Jets. Offensive line shuffling and injuries have robbed him of his best play.
“Even the [Reggie] Gilliam signing stands out as an example of the Patriots’ continued excellence in evaluating their own roster; incumbent fullback Jack Westover lost too many reps in the hole last season. Mike Vrabel’s greatest strength continues to be his nose for personnel.” – Ben Solak, ESPN
Patriots land at No. 6 in Solak’s free agency rankings
The above excerpt is from Solak’s recent free agency rankings, where he listed all of the teams in order based on their free agency moves. It includes everything from departures to additions and the Patriots came in at No. 6.
That’s a big deal for a young team looking to build off a very unexpectedly successful season.
The high ranking makes plenty of sense. Doubs is one of the more underrated receivers in the NFL and he has the WR1 upside Solak mentions. He doesn’t remove A.J. Brown from the equation, either. Vera-Tucker can be a top-10 guard in this league if he stays healthy and Kevin Byard is coming off one of the best years of his career where he recorded a league-high seven interceptions.
Vrabel has always been good at building rosters, going all the way back to his days with the Tennessee Titans. He’s also proven to be even more adept at working with what he has, which was a big factor behind his 2021 Coach of the Year nod.
It’s clear the Pats are in good hands with Vrabel. Now, it’s all about putting it all back together and staying healthy for another run at a ring.
