Veterans reported back to training camp on Tuesday, with the first official training camp practice set for Wednesday.
Jerod Mayo told reporters that everyone reported for camp, but the team still made a series of roster moves before the start. And it involved a few different players who were sidelined during the spring.
According to multiple sources, the Patriots have placed wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, linebacker Sione Takitaki, center/guard Jake Andrews, and left guard Cole Strange on the active/physically unable to perform list.
They also placed running back Antonio Gibson on the active/non-football injury list.
Strange is dealing with a "significant knee injury," and it was reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport back in May that he is expected to miss the start of the 2024 season. He could even potentially be out until the middle of the season.
So this move was no surprise.
As for Bourne, the receiver is working on coming back after suffering a season-ending ACL tear during the 2023 season. While he has made it clear on social media that he is putting on the work and getting ready to come back, the team has decided he isn't ready to fully resume.
Next up is Takitaki, who spoke with A to Z Sports at the beginning of June about why he has been sidelined, and mentioned when he was hoping to be back.
"It's something I've been dealing with since last year. Something that we're not worried about, but it's just something we want to nip in the bud before training camp," Takitaki said on Tuesday. "So I haven't been skipping a beat. I've been working out hard. Taking all the mental reps I can. And it's just again, something we're not worried about, but it's awesome to have the Patriots just making sure that I can knock it out as training camp is coming."
It seems he needs a little but more time, but luckily, it's only the start of preseason.
Lastly, Andrews was not seen throughout the spring, and there isn't much information on his injury at this time.
