FOXBOROUGH, Mass – The New England Patriots have been hit hard by injuries to start the 2024 season, and on Wednesday, they got the worst possible news.

Patriots center David Andrews suffered a shoulder injury in Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The captain was reportedly considering different options, but now it seems that he has made the decision.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Andrews is expected to have surgery to repair his "significant shoulder injury."

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed this during his press conference on Wednesday.

“I know a lot of you guys are wondering about David Andrews. It’s already out there. He’s going to require surgery and will probably go on IR,” Mayo stated.

“It’s tough. One thing about Dave, first word I would say is toughness. He’s a guy who’s been a captain here, has great leadership ability, he’s tough. He’s able to communicate across the front. It’s definitely a huge loss. That being said, next man up. I know that’s cliché, but that’s the mentality. I still expect him to be around the building. Maybe he’ll be a future coach at some point and time. We’ll see.”

And along with the offensive line, the one who is most effected on the offense is Jacoby Brissett. The quarterback was asked about this situation as well.

“That one hurt me," he said. "One of the key reasons I wanted to come back was because of my relationship with him.”

"He kinda runs the show out there. I'm just kinda co-hosting," he added. "His play speaks for itself."

Brissett added that he had a conversation with Andrews on Wednesday morning and the offensive lineman was determined to try and play through it. But in the end, he and Brissett agreed that the surgery was his best choice to set him up for the future.

MassLive further reports that Andrews wants to play in 2025 which is the reason he has decided to have the surgery.

Mayo also referenced the next man up mentality, so all eyes are on Nick Leverett who filled in for Andrews on Sunday.

“He can do it," the head coach said. "He’s proved that he can do it.”

Let's see what happens next.
