It's no secret that New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo's job is certainly not guaranteed for next season. But, many thought that the Krafts would give him at least one more season to see if he can turn things around.
However, with how bad things have gotten in Foxborough, it seems that Mayo's time might be coming to an end.
"All along, the Kraft family has wanted to stand by him and give him support. He was the hand-chosen successor to Bill Belichick. But over the last 30 days or so, the team has struggled. They have lost at home. Fans have been angered, they've been apathetic, and it feels like within the organization, there's been a shift," ESPN's Adam Schefter said.
"There's nervous people inside the building right now and we are going to go leaning out."
The Krafts have not publicly said that Mayo will be back next season. And with that, it's no secret that they want quick results. Who can forget about the video a few weeks ago where Jonathan Kraft was visibly angry over the team's performance.
Plus, Mike Vrabel is available and it seems he might want the job in New England. However, he completed an interview with the New York Jets for their opening on Friday. And that could have scared the Krafts into taking immediate action.
For a head coach, the Patriots opening is a very interesting position. While the roster needs a lot of help, they are getting the opportunity to work with Drake Maye, and that's how The Athletic's Dianna Russini described it earlier this week.
"In a league where success largely hinges on getting the quarterback right, the Patriots seem to have their guy, and it’s clear that many coaches would love the chance to work with him," she wrote.
All of this will depend on what happens in the Patriots' regular season finale against the Buffalo Bills. But if the same issues are present, then it might force the Kraft's hand. Plus, the stadium is certainly not expected to be filled and there were a lot of Bills jerseys walking in.
We'll see what happens on Black Monday and the days to follow.
