Bill Belichick made a decision that almost everybody didn't see coming. 

The future Hall of Fame coach has decided to switch over to college football, accepting the head coaching job at the University of North Carolina. 

And many questioned this decision, considering he's very close to the all-time wins record in the NFL. Belichick currently has 333 career NFL wins, sitting behind Don Shula who has 347. 

So why not try for another job in the NFL? 

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler answered that question after the news of Belichick's hiring at UNC.

"The sense from NFL owners meetings is that Bill Belichick simply hadn’t garnered much NFL interest if at all this cycle. Perhaps that would have changed, but Belichick goes with the sure thing – and a fascinating new start," Fowler wrote on X, formerly known as X.  

Based on the way this NFL season is going, it seems like there could be a lot of job openings. But maybe the situation with the Falcons scared Belichick. 

Throughout the offseason, Atlanta was the clear front-runners to land Belichick after Robert Kraft and the New England Patriots mutually parted ways with the six-time Super Bowl champion.

And everything seemed to be going in the right direction.

But in shocking twist, the Falcons decided to go in a different direction, leaving Belichick without a job for the 2024 NFL season. 

So, now that a job has become available, it appears that Belichick didn't want to wait. He made it clear that he wants to keep coaching, and he has found his new home
