The Green Bay Packers have added a second running back in a day. After re-signing James Robinson to the practice squad, the Packers have also signed Patrick Taylor to the active 53-man roster off the New England Patriots’ practice squad.
In corresponding moves, general manager Brian Gutekunst released safety Dallin Leavitt from the 53-man roster and linebacker Christian Young from the PS.
Running back moves
The Packers lost two running backs for injuries in the win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Aaron Jones (knee) and Emanuel Wilson (shoulder) are expected to be back at some point during the season, but there’s no realistic path for them to recover in time to play against the Detroit Lions on Thursday.
That forced the management to add more bodies to the room. Before the signings, AJ Dillon was the only healthy running back on the active roster — they also have rookie Ellis Merriweather on the practice squad. And maybe Dillon is not that healthy either, as he was limited on Monday’s practice estimation with a groin injury.
Known faces
Both Patrick Taylor and James Robinson have spent time with the Packers this season, which was particularly important considering they only have three days to prepare before Thanksgiving.
Taylor has played four games for the Packers this season. The last one was against the Las Vegas Raiders in week 5 — he had already had the three practice squad elevations. After the game, he was released and decided to go to the Patriots, where he could be elevated three more times. However, Taylor didn’t play a single game for New England. Meanwhile, Jones and Wilson’s injuries opened a new path for him in Green Bay. He will probably be the second running back on Thursday, right behind Dillon.
James Robinson and Ellis Merriweather are now on the practice squad. Presumably, Robinson has a better chance at being elevated for gameday on Thursday. He spent three weeks on the practice squad earlier in the season.
Good news
The fact that neither Aaron Jones nor Emanuel Wilson were moved to the injured reserve may be faced as good news regarding their health status. After the game on Sunday, Jones said he “caught a break” with positive results after fearing he had suffered a season-ending injury. Wilson also said he expects to be back soon.
A move to IR would force them to miss at least four games. So if the Packers decided to keep them on the active roster, it’s probably because they expect both Jones and Wilson to be back before that.
