The New England Patriots confirmed the tragic death of 2011 third-round pick Ryan Mallett in a statement Tuesday night.
“The New England Patriots are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of former quarterback Ryan Mallett," the statement read.
“Our thoughts are with the Mallett family, his former teammates and all who are mourning his loss.”
Mallett, who was 35, drowned in Florida on Tuesday, according to Deltaplex News. Mallett was pronounced dead after being transported to a Florida hospital from a beach, according to the Deltaplex News.
Mallett, who was serving as the head coach of White Hall (Ark.) High School, was selected by the Patriots out of the University of Arkansas. He played seven years in the NFL and completed 55.1 percent of his passes for 1,835 yards with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He started eight NFL games with the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens after being traded by the Patriots.
Mallett played four games with New England, going 1-of-4 for 17 yards with an interception in 2012.
Tributes poured in from Mallett’s former teammates.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick also released a statement on Mallett's passing.
