For years, Bill Belichick has been regarded as one of, if not the best coach in the history of the National Football League. However, with the Patriots' recent struggles, many have started to doubt this, leading to rumors that he is on the hot seat.
Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show on Monday, Adam Schefter was asked about these rumors, providing his personal opinion along with a detailed response that still didn't give much away. Here is what he said:
“Well first of all, I think he’s treated differently, as he should be, than any other coach. On a Monday or Sunday night after the season ends, we’ll get three, four, five, six firings of head coaches and I just don’t think you’re going to get one of these statements on the last regular season game that Sunday night where the Patriots are firing Bill Belichick. I just don’t think it works like that when there’s the history and the accomplishments and the resumes and the relationship that there has been between he and Robert Kraft. And so this situation is treated entirely differently. And they’re having the type of season that’s going to warrant those types of questions. And everybody’s going to wonder exactly how the situation is going to play out. Because nobody thinks that they can continue just like this with the team reeling in a way that we’re not used to seeing, with the offense struggling in a way we’re not used to seeing, with a team performing in a way we're not used to seeing. This is so abnormal for a team that has been the best team arguably in all of sports over the last couple of decades. So Bill, I think, is 71 years old and everybody wants to see change and he has been the guy at the top. Look I just think there are going to be some hard conversations that naturally occur between he and Robert Kraft and where those go, I don’t know. Is Bill going to want out? Are they going to want him out? Are they going to decide to mutually end it together? There are a whole bunch of questions about how it will go on.”
For the first time since 1995, the Patriots have started the season 1-5, with their sole win coming against the New York Jets. With a struggling offensive line, poor performances by the quarterbacks including Mac Jones, receivers not getting open, and injuries shaking up the team, the blame has fallen on Belichick for his failures in the past few draft classes along with the lack of top free agents coming to New England despite having the cap space available.
"GM Bill has hurt Coach Bill," Schefter said. "Coach Bill is arguably the greatest coach of all time, but GM Bill has hurt Coach Bill because they just don't have the same level of talent that other teams do right now for whatever reason."
As the Patriots continue to try and salvage the season, Belichick's job security will continue to be a question. And it's one that Schefter will certainly be asked about many more times, so we'll see if his answer changes throughout the remainder of the season.
