There is no mistaking that Darrelle Revis will be remembered as one of the best cornerbacks in the game of football.
And he was able to accomplish two things that all NFL players set out to do: win a Super Bowl and be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Revis is one of nine who will earn their gold jackets in Canton, OH this weekend and was present at the Hall of Game game between the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns on Thursday. During the game, he spoke about what this honor means to him, hearing a special message from one of his former coaches.
While he only played with the New England Patriots for one season, it was certainly a season to remember. And he got to learn from one of the best defensive minds in the NFL.
And how could Bill Belichick not be happy with Revis' production in New England, as the cornerback recorded 47 tackles, two interceptions, 14 passes defended, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery during the 2014 season.
However, Belichick had some encounters with Revis on the other side of the field, with him having played for the Jets for eight seasons. And Belichick finally let Revis know about the game plan the Patriots had when facing off against him and the Jets.
"As an opponent, we targeted him less than any other past defender we've played against," Belichick told NBC (via Thursday Night's Hall of Fame Game broadcast).
And Revis was left speechless after hearing this.
"For Bill Belichick to have a compliment like that, I'm just honored. I'm honored. I loved to play for him and I don't know if I'm getting choked up right now, because you know Bill is an amazing coach and he doesn't really talk much and give out compliments," Revis said on the broadcast after hearing what Belichick said about him. "So for him to say that, I'm just, I have so much humility right now and I appreciate that."
However, he did admit that the games between the two division rivals were entertaining.
"The battles were fun obviously, but at the same time it's great," Revis said. "I came with a lot of passion, that way I played the position. I've studied so many greats. I tried to mimic, I tried to pick anything out of their games and tried to implement it into mine. And I just tried to be an all-around cornerback and that's what I tried to do when I approached the game."
But that wasn't the only "fun" that was hand, with former Patriots teammate Devin McCourty, who made his debut on NBC Sports "Football Night in America," poking fun at Jets fans.
“And I know it makes Jets fans sick that you had to come to New England to get that Super Bowl,” McCourty said to Revis before the HOF Game. “And that’s what it’s all about.”
However, New York fans will be happy to know that he did still refer to the Jets as "his team" during the broadcast.
Along with making homes in both New England and New York, Revis is also one of three Aliquippa, PA natives to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining Ty Law and Mike Ditka. And he is happy to represent not just the teams he played for, but also his hometown.
"I think this induction is very, very special, you know, not only for me, but for my community, the city of Aliquippa. There's so many greats come through there and I'm happy to be representing my hometown."
Revis retired in 2018 after 11 season in the NFL, playing with the Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs.
