FOXBOROUGH, Mass – Among many of the controversies this season surrounding the New England Patriots, one that many are upset over is the team not re-signing Jakobi Meyers following the 2022 season.
Instead they brought on JuJu Smith-Schuster, giving him a three-year, $33 million contract. The Las Vegas Raiders took advantage of this, signing Meyers to the same contract with them.
And with Smith-Schuster underperforming this season while Meyers is thriving with the Raiders, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was questioned about this on Wednesday ahead of their Week 6 matchup in Las Vegas.
When asked about why Meyers wasn't more of a priority during free agency, Belichick denied those comments.
"He was a priority," Belichick said. "We talked to him."
He was also asked if they ever felt that they were close to making a deal.
"Relatively, yeah," he added. "But free agency is free agency."
However, Meyers seemed to deny this when the Patriots originally signed Smith-Schuster, responding to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport's tweet reporting the deal.
Meyers signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2019, earning a spot on the roster and proving himself during his three seasons in New England. While he said he wanted to return, the Patriots brought in Smith-Schuster instead.
The Raiders receiver has been solid this season, recording 25 receptions for 274 yards and 3 touchdowns across five games. Belichick added that "Jakobi looks like he looked here."
As for Smith-Schuster, he has 14 receptions for 86 yards and no touchdowns. Belichick was also asked about the 2022 Super Bowl champions' lack of production.
"We haven't been very productive offensively, period," he said.
Meyers will once again see the Patriots this Sunday but on the opposite side of the field. Him and former New England quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will look to get a win over their former team.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass – To no one's surprise, Bill Belichick had an expected answer when asked about who will be the starting quarterback going into Sunday's game. And many may not like his answer. When asked if it would be Mac Jones, Belichick simply said, “Yeah, we’re not making any changes.” This came after Belichick said […]
