The New England Patriots opened an opportunity for a linebacker who shined for the XFL's St. Louis BattleHawks this season.
The XFL announced Friday that the Patriots invited linebacker Carson Wells to camp.
His tryout with the Patriots took place Thursday, according to a source.
Wells, 24, played collegiately at the University of Colorado. He's also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Wells primarily played as an undersized edge defender in college at 6-foot-3, 241 pounds. He played middle linebacker in the XFL and registered 45 tackles with 3.5 sacks in 10 games. He added 22 total pressures and 25 defensive stops, per PFF.
The Patriots recently placed linebacker Raekwon McMillan on injured reserve. They're left with Ja'Whaun Bentley, Jahlani Tavai, rookie Marte Mapu, Mack Wilson, Chris Board, Olakunle Fatukasi, Terez Hall, Jourdan Heilig and Calvin Munson at the position.
Wells ran a 4.61-second 40-yard dash at his pro day in March 2022 with a 35-inch vertical leap, 9-feet, 11-inch broad jump, 4.56-second short shuttle, 7.18-second 3-cone drill and 16 bench press reps of 225 pounds.
The Patriots, who have two open roster spots, remain interested in signing Wells, per a source. The Patriots are in the midst of organized team activities. Minicamp begins June 12. It's unclear when Wells will come to Foxboro.
