FOXBOROUGH, Mass – Jabrill Peppers has made some major plays this season and once again, he did not disappoint in Sunday's win over the Buffalo Bills.
The New England Patriots have been known for some slow starts, but something flipped and they were able to charge down the field on the opening drive. Chad Ryland's 30 yard field goal put the Patriots up by three.
But it wasn't a comforting lead, with the Patriots forced to now give the ball over to Josh Allen.
On his first play of the game, Allen aimed to hit tight end Dawson Knox, but Peppers read the play easily and intercepted the ball. And when asked about the play after, he provided some insight into the pick.
“It’s always good to start fast. You have to have a good start in this league, and I try to be a spark plug in any way possible," Peppers said. "That was a play I recognized on tape, just having to play the proper technique and catch the ball, man. I was happy I could get the team one.”
In last week's loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, Peppers forced another turnover, executing a harsh but legal hit on Davante Adams that knocked the ball loose.
His menacing ways have certainly caught the attention of his teammates, and one Patriots captain provided reporters with a little insight into Peppers' reputation in the locker room.
“Pep, you’re a little bit of psychopath," David Andrews said. "I mean, he just — he screams a lot. He’s from Jersey; I don’t understand half the stuff he says. He’s just out there screaming."
"Pep’s been a great addition to our locker room," Andrews added. "He plays the game the right way, I think. He plays it tough, plays it physical. I appreciate having a guy like him in our locker room.”
And head coach Bill Belichick even had some kind words to share about Peppers following the game.
"Yeah, Pep’s had a good year. Very explosive player, hard tackler. Big play on the interception," Belichick said. " That was a nice kind of – we got hit on that play against them last year. And we worked on it in practice. He played it well. Did a nice job to go up and high point the ball. We worked a lot on [Josh] Allen throwing the ball down the field."
"Pep’s been good for us," he added. "And, you know, he’s helped us in the kicking game, as well."
Peppers joined the Patriots prior to the 2022 season, coming off of a torn ACL he suffered the season before. And that's how Andrews got to know the defensive back
"But, I can remember last year when Pep came in, we were rehabbing together coming off of injuries, and those were some fun times," Andrews said. "Out there running with Pep, I don’t like running, but he made running pretty fun. I think I beat him a couple times, too, so he was hurting a little bit.
In his career, Peppers has 4.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and four interceptions on top of the 429 total tackles.
It's safe to say that he's a pretty impactful play.
There is still plenty of time remaining in the season and if the Patriots are looking to turn things around, they are going to need Peppers to keep making these big plays. And if his mentality is any indication, there are a lot more coming.
