It seems the Pittsburgh Steelers weren't the only team interested in trading with the New England Patriots on the first night of the 2023 NFL Draft.
In a new behind-the-scenes video following the Washington Commanders through their war room on the first night, it appears that general manager, Martin Mayhew called the Patriots about a possible trade.
Mayhew spoke with Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf, interested in trading up to get New England's 14th overall pick.
However, the Patriots were not a fan of what they were offered in return.
In exchange for the first-round pick, the Patriots would receive the Commanders' 16th overall pick along with another pick later in the draft. Wolf specifically asked for Washington's third-round pick (No. 97 overall), but the Commanders were unwilling to budge.
Wolf continued to try for the third-round pick, offering the Commanders a first-round and sixth-round pick, but Mayhew did not take the deal.
In the end, both teams were able to draft the player they wanted.
The Patriots traded with the Pittsburgh Steelers instead, receiving the No. 17 overall pick along with a fourth-round pick (No. 120 overall) and were able to draft a player projected to go in the top 10. New England picked Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
As for the Commanders, they were able to pick Mississippi State cornerback Emmanuel Forbes.
The Commanders sat back and patiently waited to see if they would get Forbes, and in the end they were able to make the call to get the cornerback.
So, it's pretty clear that things worked out for both teams.
