Punter Jake Bailey’s time with the New England Patriots has come to an end and so has his contract grievance against his former team.
Bailey, who was released by the Patriots earlier this month, filed a grievance when he was suspended by the team at the end of the 2022 season while on injured reserve with a back injury. Bailey and his agent, Doug Hendrickson, withdrew the grievance, per NFLPA records. Since Bailey was suspended by the Patriots in 2022, the guarantees for his 2023 salary were voided.
The Patriots don’t owe Bailey any money, they took a salary cap hit of $2.37 million due to a prorated signing bonus, and they get a salary cap credit of $44,444, The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin summarized Saturday.
Bailey wound up signing a one-year, $1.2325 million contract with the Patriots’ AFC East-rival Miami Dolphins with $1.0925 million in total guarantees and a $152.5k signing bonus.
Bailey was an All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in 2020 before struggling in 2021 and taking a precipitous nosedive in 2022. Bailey said his issues last season were caused by aggravating his back by squatting. He ranked among the NFL’s worst punters in most metrics.
New England signed ex-Denver Broncos punter Corliss Waitman to replace Bailey. They also could take a punter in the 2023 NFL Draft.
