Running back James Robinson’s career with the New England Patriots was short-lived.
Robinson, a minicamp absence, was waived by the Patriots on Monday. Robinson signed a two-year, $4 million contract with no guarantees this offseason in free agency. The transaction opens up $1.6 million in cap space.
The former Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets ball-carrier tore his Achilles in 2021. He was a 1,000-yard rusher in 2020 as a rookie with the Jaguars.
New England is left with Rhamondre Stevenson, Ty Montgomery, Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor at the position. It’s at least worth noting that Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook currently is a free agent.
Stevenson was a bell-cow back for the Patriots last season. Strong and Harris have received a lot of work in OTAs and minicamp so far this spring. Montgomery is a pass-catching back who missed most of last season with an injury.
New England also waived defensive back Tae Hayes and signed defensive tackle Justus Tavai. Their roster currently stands at 87 players as free-agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is scheduled to visit.
