It was nearly 100 degrees out on the New England Patriots practice field, but the players appeared unbothered by the heat.

After a day off from pads, the Patriots took the field in full uniform and practiced for just over two hours. And there was plenty to see.

So without further ado, let's get into the takeaways from Day 8 of training camp.

1. DeMario Douglas' impact is major

After a standout rookie season, everyone was excited to see what DeMario Douglas had in store for his second year in the league.

And if training camp is any indication, he's going to be one of the key pieces of the Patriots offense.

Douglas has been spotted in a red-non contact jersey during camp, and while he took the field in his regular jersey to start on Friday, he had an outfit change and went right back into the red for drills. But he still was participating and made some insane catches during team drills.

2. Matthew Judon is a full participant

This week has been a whirlwind for Matthew Judon, with a lot of controversy beginning on Monday. He showed up for the first padded practice without his pads and simply sat to the sidelines during the start of the session. It was clear he was making a point, and after some headed discussions, he left the field. On Tuesday, he was a non-show. And then the team had a day off on Wednesday.

Jerod Mayo came out on Thursday morning and spoke with reporters, saying that his intention was Judon would be out with the team… and he was right.

But on Friday, it really showed that things between Judon and the Patriots were going in the right direction when he came out in pads and was a full participant.

Maybe this means a contract extension is near.

And along with Judon, Jabrill Peppers returned to practice in full pads after being sidelined the past few days (due to injury we believe).

3. Drake Maye has some success in the RZ

Head coach Jerod Mayo made it very clear who the top quarterbacks on the roster are at the moment.

Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye took nearly every rep in competitive drills on Friday, with Milton getting just one during 11v11s.

Maye was able to locat numerous receivers in the red zone, and overall had a very strong day.

Here are the full quarterback stats

11v11s
Jacoby Brissett: 13/22
Drake Maye: 7/9
Joe Milton III: 0/1

7v7s
Jacoby Brissett: 4/5
Drake Maye: 4/5

4. No Reps for Bailey Zappe

While Milton got the one drive during 11s, Bailey Zappe didn't get a single opportunity during team drills.

And considering he is fighting for a spot on the roster, this was not the best sign.

5. Chad Ryland is ahead in the kicker competition

For the second straight day, the team practiced field goals to close out practice.

Similar to Thursday, Ryland had a perfect record. He went 5-for-5, while Joey Slye went 4-for-5. Slye miss one on both Thursday and Friday.

6. Attendance

Missing: CB Marcus Jones, TE Jaheim Bell, DT Christian Barmore, OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr., RB DeShaun Fenwick

PUP: WR Kendrick Bourne, G Cole Strange, OL Jake Andrews, LB Sione Takitaki

*Jones left practice early on Thursday due to an apparent injury

*Following practice, the team announce that they had waived Wheatley Jr. and Fenwick

7. Calvin Anderson Injury Scare

During an 11-on-11 period, Calvin Anderson stayed down and was being tended to by members of the medical staff. It was a left leg/ankle injury, but he was able to stand up and walk over to the side on his own without a cleat on.

However, he later returned to practice and even got right back into the scrimmage at right tackle.
