FOXBOROUGH, Mass – A key member of the New England Patriots offense went down during Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
In the first quarter, Stevenson sustained an ankle injury and remained down on the field after the play. He was helped off by trainers, barely putting any pressure on his right foot.
He immediately went to the locker room and was ruled questionable to return, before officially being ruled out at the start of the second half.
The Athletic's Jeff Howe reported that Stevenson's initial X-rays were negative, but he was set to undergo more tests. He later reported that "the initial belief is Stevenson will miss time, possibly multiple games."
They are still waiting on more tests to find out the full extend of the injury.
Stevenson highlighted the Patriots offense in the opening drives of Sunday's game. However, Chargers linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu executed what is known as the hip-drop tackle, taking Stevenson down from behind.
Because of the hit, Stevenson fumbled the ball and Tuipulotu recovered it.
Ezekiel Elliott took over, having an increased role after Stevenson went down. And he was able to pick up where his fellow running back left off, with the Patriots relying heavily on the run game.
Injuries have not been kind to the Patriots this season, having already lost Matthew Judon, Christian Gonzalez, Marcus Jones, and Kendrick Bourne. And it's unknown how long they will be without Stevenson.
In an already struggling offense, losing one of their top playmakers is not what this team needs right now.
Patriots’ Malik Cunningham doesn’t know why he didn’t play in loss to Chargers
He was always ready to go if they needed him.
