It's fair to say that the New England Patriots offense had many struggles last season, and a lot of that came down to the decisions.
While they refused to name an official offensive coordinator, it became fairly clear that they were leaning on Matt Patricia. And what can only be described as an "experiment," did not work out.
"That wasn't a good thing. There was nothing good about that," Devin McCourty said on The Greg Hill Show. "From training camp, there was nothing good about that."
Patricia joined the Patriots organization in 2004 as an offensive assistant, transitioning to different coaching titles before being named defensive coordinator in 2012. During his time in New England, he helped lead the team to three Super Bowl championships.
In 2018, Patricia was hired as the head coach of the Detroit Lions, finishing with an overall record of 13-29 in his three seasons before being fired.
He returned to the Patriots in 2021 as a senior football advisor.
And his reunion did not go as expected.
"I think everybody in New England, and I think even Matty P, is happy that whole experiment is over," McCourty said. "And he's back to doing what he loves doing – coaching ball and talking defense."
Patricia joined the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason as their senior defensive assistant, and will be returning to Gillette Stadium on Sunday for the season opener.
After a strong showing in his rookie season, quarterback Mac Jones showed a serious decline last season, finishing with a QBR of 36.1, after having a QBR of 56.9 in his first year.
But regardless of what happened, his contributions to the Patriots organization cannot be forgotten and it's clear that the players Patricia worked with still hold a lot of respect for him.
"I said it all last year, he's a really good football coach," McCourty said. He's a defensive mind. That's what he is and that's what he's made his living on in the NFL. So, he's going to get back to doing that."
