Two top free agents are still on the market as training camp looms closer, with the Patriots being seen as front runners to land a star receiver.
During mandatory minicamp, many of the players were questioned about the possibility of landing DeAndre Hopkins. However, over the last few weeks, the players have been on vacation before they return to the field, and therefore have avoided these questions.
But, it seems likely that they never assumed the questions might come from one of their former teammates.
Two current and one former Patriots captains spoke with WBZ-TV's Steve Burton on Tuesday from the Ron Burton Training Village in Hubbardston, with Matthew Slater joking that Devin McCourty is on the media's team now.
And in response, McCourty put on his reporter hat and fired away one of the most asked questions circling around New England.
“Let’s jump in,” McCourty said. “DeAndre Hopkins, Dalvin Cook — a lot of rumors going on out there. You guys are captains. I’ve been in your shoes, so I know you meet with Bill (Belichick), you’re in there, he’s probably reaching out to you guys. We gonna get these guys?”
But David Andrews and Slater weren't willing to give anything away.
“You should ask Bill,” Andrews said. “You should text him and ask him.”
Slater continued to deflect McCourty's question.
“We’re just gonna work hard, put the team first, do our job and try to get better every day starting in two weeks,” Slater said.
And both answers couldn't have been described any better than by Burton who referred to them as "such a Patriot answer."
Since he couldn't get any answers out of Andrews and Slater, McCourty decided he might go straight to the source.
"I'll start a group text, all of us," McCourty responded. "If he kicks me out and tells just you two, you reach back out because I started it."
The Patriots and the Tennessee Titans have been the two main teams to pursue Hopkins, with the Titan's efforts reportedly being "more aggressive." With that, the Titans have also become the betting favorites to land the Pro Bowl receiver.
However, Hopkins' visit with the Patriots was very successful and it's clear there is mutual interest between the receiver and New England.
So maybe McCourty can get some insider information about where Hopkins is leaning towards.
