Free-agent recruitment might work on other players, but New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty is too old for that game.

Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day learned that the hard way when he tweeted at the 35-year-old McCourty, “@devinmccourty Dev what’s good, I heard you’re a free agent is that correct? ⚡️"

McCourty, who was selected by the Patriots in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft and has spent his entire career in New England, quickly batted away the attention.

"😂😂😂😂I only look good in a pats uniform bro," McCourty tweeted back.

McCourty has played in five and won three Super Bowls with the Patriots. He’s also one of the most durable players of his era, playing over 90 percent of snaps in all 13 of his NFL seasons.

McCourty began his career as a cornerback before transitioning to safety full-time in 2013.

The three-time All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowl selection has not announced whether he has decided to keep playing or whether to retire as the free agency tampering period is set to begin Monday at noon. McCourty is making it pretty obvious that if he does lace up the cleats in 2023, it will be with the Patriots.

The Patriots will have a major void to fill if McCourty retires. They have depth at strong safety but no obvious fill-in at the free safety position. One option, if McCourty retires, would be to move slot cornerback Jonathan Jones to free safety and have 2022 third-round pick Marcus Jones fill the slot void. Jonathan Jones, however, is also a free agent, so that would be dependent upon him returning.
