It is happening.
The New England Patriots are getting close to deciding who will be their next franchise quarterback. And one of the top prospects will be in Foxborough very soon.
According to The MMQB's Albert Breer, the Patriots are hosting North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye on a top-30 visit on Friday at Gillette Stadium.
The Patriots have already spent some time with the quarterback having met with him at the 2024 NFL Combine and once again at his UNC's Pro Day. So if things go well, the Patriots' plans for the No. 3 overall pick will become more clear.
And Maye has already said that he is interested in moving to Massachusetts.
“New England, I mean, it's hard not to talk about The Dynasty, you know, you think of the GOAT. That’s what you think of when you think of New England you think of the GOAT, Tom Brady," Maye said when speaking on Adam Schefter's podcast at the end of February. "So, just a place with— that’s had a lot of success and had some years lately that they haven't been as successful and looking to get back on track and I know that's, you know, right there near Boston. These are three great sports towns you’re talking about now.
"So, all great places to play and, you know, I think a great spot to be a, you know, franchise quarterback at and that’s what I’m working towards.”
Maye earned the starting roll at UNC in 2022, after Howell left to go to the NFL. During his first year as a starter, he finished with 342 completions for 4,321 passing yards and 38 passing touchdowns, along with 184 carries for 698 yards and seven rushing touchdowns.
This past season, he had 269 completions for 3,608 passing yards and 24 passing touchdowns, along with 112 carries for 449 yards and nine rushing touchdowns.
So in short: any team would be lucky to land Maye. And at this point, it's looking good for the Patriots.
