Bill Belichick on Patrice Bergeron

There is no higher praise Patriots head coach Bill Belichick could give then what he said to one newly retired Boston athlete on Thursday.

Earlier this week, Patrice Bergeron announced his retirement after 19 seasons in the NFL, all with the Bruins. A legend in Boston, many of the individuals in the Patriots organization were asked about the Bruins captain.

And Bill Belichick was the latest to voice his congratulations for Bergeron.

“Yeah, I mean obviously great," Belichick said. "All of the coaches that have been here, Claude (Julien), Bruce (Cassidy), Jim (Montgomery) now, everybody’s raved about him and what he’s meant to the team, the organization, just in all the things.

And to top it all off, Belichick compared Bergeron to one Patriots legend.

"It sounds like he was kind of their Devin McCourty, just did everything right," Belichick said. "A great leader and player, so congratulations on a tremendous career.”

McCourty retired after his 13th season in the league, serving as a longtime captain for New England.

Him and Bergeron had a lot in common, remaining in the Boston area for their entire careers and helping lead the to championship(s).

Matthew Slater and David Andrews also commented on Bergeron's retirement on Tuesday.

“I think he should be celebrated as an icon for the city of Boston and Boston sports," Slater said. "So I think it’s a bit of a sad day for Boston sports fans, but we should certainly celebrate everything he’s done. I wish him the best. Congratulations on a tremendous career,

Andrews echoed these sentiments.

"What an amazing career he's had and how fortunate to play for such a great organization. A lot of respect for the way he's carried himself," Andrews said. "I know he's a great player. Just the way he's carried himself in communities and led the team, I think it's been really impressive."

Bergeron finished his career with one Stanley Cup championship along with being a six-time Selke Award winner and nine-time All-star.
