FOXBOROUGH, Mass – When Drake Maye went into the game in Thursday night's Week 3 loss to the New York Jets, some people were beyond excited while others were holding their breath.
People have been on the edge of their seat, waiting to see what the rookie can do. And there were flashes of promise that should have fans excited about the future.
But there is one other aspect of the offense that is very worrisome and is a large reason why it might not be in the team's best interest to start Maye.
Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been knocked down so many times in just three games this season, highlighting the serious issues with the offensive line. Specifically, against the Jets, Brissett was sacked five times and took 10 quarterback hits. He was pressured on 52.2 percent of his dropbacks, according to PFF.
The team has not had a true starting five, with a different left tackle in that role for each game. First it was Chukwuma Okorafor, and then it was Vederian Lowe, and most recently, rookie Caedan Wallace was the next man up.
So if Brissett were to go down, Maye would have to step in as the starter. Head coach Jerod Mayo has said over and over again that they have a clear development plan for the rookie, but an injury could speed that up.
So Mayo was asked if the team has considered bringing in another veteran quarterback that could take over if needed, which would allow the team to still have control over when Maye starts.
"That's not in our plans at this current time," Mayo told reporters on Wednesday.
In Maye's short time on the field, he was sacked twice, going 4-for-8 for 22 yards along with two carries for 12 yards.
The head coach revealed why he put Maye in the game during his postgame press conference on Thursday.
"I just thought it was an opportunity, a good opportunity for him to go out there with the ones and put a few drives together, move the ball," Mayo explained and was asked about how the offensive line effected that decision.
"It definitely was something that I thought of personally, but at the same time I thought it was too good of an opportunity for him to get out there and get some experience."
Clearly the coaching staff has faith in Maye, if he is needed, the team won't hesitate to put him in.
