The New England Patriots have filled their open special coordinator job.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Patriots have hired Rams assistant special teams coach Jeremy Springer, "a rising young coach."

This is the second big hire for new head coach Jerod Mayo, who has reportedly promoted defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator.

Springer will replace Cam Achord who has served as the Patriots special teams coordinator since 2020.

Prior to Springer getting the job, they reportedly offered it to Falcons special teams coach Marquice Williams, but he opted to remain in Atlanta with new head coach Raheem Morris. The only other candidate to get an interview was former New York Giants special teams coach Thomas McGaughey.

Springer was a linebacker and special teams player in college at the University of Texas at El Paso, but turned to coaching right after he graduated. He started at Texas A&M, but moved to the University of Arizona in 2018. There he got his first opportunity as a special teams coordinator. In 2021, Springer moved to Marshall in the same position.

And after that, he got his first shot in the NFL under the direction of Rams head coach Sean McVay.

Special teams had some issues this season, being undisciplined throughout the year. But hopefully Springer can turn things around.

Now all that's left is the open offensive coordinator position.
