New England Patriots cornerback Jack Jones has pleaded not guilty to numerous charges against him after he was arrested on Friday evening for trying to bring two loaded firearms on a plane at Boston Logan International Airport.
The cornerback appeared in East Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday and his attorney spoke to the media following the arraignment.
"As far as Mr. Jones is concerned, it's the social media and the media who have turned him into a thug. Who have labeled him a thug with no evidence whatsoever," Jones's attorney Rosemary Scapicchio said. "This is not a situation where Mr. Jones ever wanted to be a thug or thought of as a thug, but because he's a young Black man, all of the sudden he's a thug."
"That label that has been attached to him through social media, almost got him fired, and it was completely unfounded," Scapicchio continued. "He's a young Black man charged with a crime. Happens all the time. Let's just deal with the actual facts."
Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon has also hit back at the media for painting Jones in a bad light.
Jones is being charged with two counts of each of the following offenses:
– Possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport.
– Possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card.
– Unlawful possession of a firearm.
– Carrying a loaded firearm.
– Possession of a large-capacity feeding device
"He had no intention of brining any guns into Logan Airport that day," Scapicchio said. "I expect that the evidence is going to show that he had no knowledge of what was going on."
"The guns were in a bag with his name on it. That doesn't make him a thug. That doesn't make him a wannabe criminal in this case. That doesn't make him a wannabe gang member. That makes him an individual charged with a crime," Scapicchio added.
Jones was "ticketed for travel to Los Angeles International Airport", according to the TSA when the firearms were found at 5:30 p.m. Jones' carry-on luggage. Massachusetts State Police were called to Terminal B when the items were recognized and he was booked at the State Police-Logan Airport Barrack.
Scapicchio also expressed her gratitude towards the Patriots organization, who confirmed that they are aware of the situation, releasing a statement on Friday following the arrest.
"We're grateful to the Patriots organization and the leaders of the Patriots that they didn't believe and read in and feed in to what was happening on social media," Scapicchio said.
Since the arrest, there has been no further communication from the Patriots or the NFL.
Scapicchio was then asked if they have had any contact with the Patriots prior to the arrest, but she declined to answer.
Jones is due back in court on August 18 and was released on a $30,000 bail,.
"All Mr. Jones wants to do is play Football. He doesn't want to be a distraction at all."
