FOXBORO, Mass. — Jack Jones spoke to the media following Friday night's in-stadium practice for the first time since he was arrested in June.
"When I get out here on this football field, it's all ball man," Jones said. “I just come out here to play ball and give it my all. And do what I’m supposed to for the team.”
Jones was arrested on June 16 for trying to bring two loaded firearms on the plane at Boston Logan International Airport. He was arraigned in East Boston District Court the following week, and was released on a $30,000 bail.
Jones was asked about the events that occurred on the night of his arrest from his point of view, but as expected, he decline to answer.
"I mean, I can't answer that question. That's a question for my lawyer," Jones said.
He was also asked about whether he is hopeful that he will be on the team this season.
“That’s not my call. That’s up to coach,” Jones said. “I just do what I’m supposed to do on the field, give it my all every day and hope it falls in the right place.”
And with that, Jones' thoughts on his future in the NFL were also questioned.
“I mean, every day you’re worried about your future on any team because this league is very liquid,” Jones said. “You could be here today and gone tomorrow on any team so you just have to go out there and participate. Availability is the best ability.”
Jones is entering his second season with the Patriots after being drafted in the fourth round (121st overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft. He finished his rookie season with 30 total tackles (25 solo), two interceptions and one touchdown.
However that same year, he was suspended for two games which was related to a fine he received by the team for missing rehabilitation appointments.
While it was uncertain whether Jones would be at training camp, Patriots coach Bill Belichick told reporters that he was expecting the cornerback to be in attendance.
And he has been there for every session.
Yet, he suffered a setback on Thursday, with Jones abruptly leaving practice on Thursday after he broke up a pass along the sideline intended for Kendrick Bourne and got heated following the play. Soon after, he was seen walking to the stairs alongside Jabrill Peppers in what was assumed as an attempt to calm him down.
Jones later returned to the fields, but remained on the sidelines and had chats with Jalen Mills and Matt Groh. Yet, he never returned to team drills.
“Yesterday at practice? Just football,” Jones said when asked about the situation. “Today is today. It’s in the past. It’s nothing bad. We good today though.”
Mills was then asked about his conversation with Jones, but chose to keep that private.
“I kind of want to keep that between me and him,” Mills said about the conversation. “Jack is a phenomenal player. A young guy who is growing each and every day on this team and just has to continue to do that.”
Jones is being charged with two counts of possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.
He is due back in court on August 18, which is just a day before New England's final preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.
