Arriving to the practice fields for each session of training camp, Kendrick Bourne is focused on putting last season behind him and focusing on getting back to the level he knows he can play at.
Bourne had a disappointing season in 2022, playing in 16 games with only 35 receptions for 434 yards and one touchdown. This came after he set a career high with 55 catches and 800 receiving yards during the 2021 season.
However, he put in the work over the offseason and New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick took note.
"Yeah, KB’s (Kendrick Bourne) has had a really good offseason. Really good," Belichick said. "Physically it was good, mentally it was good, participation was good. He was good on the field, good off the field. Yeah, he had a really good offseason."
Bourne began his career with the San Francisco 49ers, signing as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He spent the following four years with the 49ers before signing with the Patriots on a three-year, $15 million contract in March 2021.
However, Bourne explained that this offseason was unlike any other, with him prepared to be a top weapon in the Patriots offense.
"Just putting in the work every day. Make every day count. So I feel good man. I feel good right now. Probably the best I've ever felt man. So it was worth it and just having that mindset every offseason not to relax too much and stay consistent. I'm just doing everything right man. Rehabbing, taking care of my body."
"I will say I did that a lot better this offseason than I ever have," Bourne added.
Across his six years in the league, Bourne has 227 receptions for 3,003 yards and 17 touchdowns. But he is heading into a contract year and will have to truly prove himself to earn a spot on the roster next year.
With Bill O'Brien calling the plays, it's almost like a fresh start for the receiver, so let's see if he truly embraces this opportunity.
