Mac Jones is ready to put last year behind him.
After a struggling season under the direction of 2022 offensive play-caller Matt Patricia and a new season coming up with returning offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien at the helm, we now know how quarterback Mac Jones feels about the decision to move on from Patricia in the offseason.
Longtime NFL and Patriots reporter Mike Giardi reported that Mac Jones is "energized" by the change in leadership on the offense.
O'Brien has past experience working with Jones with the duo having briefly crossed paths at Alabama. The hope is that O'Brien will help Jones get back on track after the struggles he faced in his second season in the league.
Giardi added that there have been more positive reviews from Jones' teammates and coaches, saying he is "Confident. Leading like we know he can," while adding that he is "ready to remind (fans) why he was a playoff QB in year one."
In his rookie season, Jones performed well in the 2021 NFL draft class for quarterbacks under the direction of Josh McDaniels. He finished with a QBR of 56.9.
However, after McDaniels left to take the head coaching position with the Las Vegas Raiders, the Patriots brought back a familiar face in Patricia. The former defensive coordinator switched over to the offensive side, and while Belichick never officially announced who was the true coordinator for the season, Patricia was seen making most of the play calls.
In his second season in the league, Jones' QBR dropped to 36.1, showing drops in his passing attempts, completions, and touchdowns. The only stat that increased was his number of sacks, going from 28 in his rookie year to 34.
In January, the Patriots brought back Bill O'Brien who had spent five seasons with the Patriots from 2007 through the 2011 season. The move appeared to be a step in the right direction for New England, with McDaniels believing that it is a positive change for Jones.
"I think he's a great coach," McDaniels said at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this year. "Billy's worked with a lot of quarterbacks before, and they've all had success, and he's impacted all of those guys in a positive way. He knows the position really well, understands the league, understands how to get the most out of players at this level. He'll do a great job."
And with O'Brien on staff, Patricia left and is now on the Eagles as their senior defensive assistant.
With minicamp right around the corner, everyone will be keeping a close eye on the partnership between O'Brien and Jones.
