Now that we've gone through the offensive players, let's switch our focus to the defense (and one special teamer).
There are two key defensive players who are set to return after being sidelined for the majority of last season with injuries. And while the defense did very well last season without them, there is no denying that they are at a different level when Matthew Judon and Christian Gonzalez are on the field.
So let's see why I chose these two defenders and this one special teamer.
LB Matthew Judon
After missing all of the optional team activities, Matthew Judon is set to return to the facility on Monday for the first day of Mandatory Minicamp. The linebacker is heading into a contract year, but has truly been a staple of the Patriots defense since coming to New England. So the team should be doing everything they can to lock him in. And if he's hoping to get that big contract, this is the start for him to prove that he's worth it.
He suffered a torn lower bicep in Week 4 of the 2023 season and was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the year. So it will be good to have him back.
CB Christian Gonzalez
Christian Gonzalez was on track to potentially win the coveted defensive rookie of the year award with his stellar start last season, but was another one who was knocked out due to injury. In early October in the Patriots loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Gonzalez suffered a dislocated shoulder which required surgery. Because of that, he was placed on injured reserve.
But prior to the injury, Gonzalez had 17 total tackles, one sack, one interception, and three passes defended across four games. So imagine what he can do with a full season.
K Chad Ryland
It was not an easy rookie season for kicker Chad Ryland. He struggled immensely, missing numerous kicks that he should have made. So this is a very important offseason for him, especially considering the team brought in veteran kicker Joey Slye. So he needs to prove that he has improved and is ready to tackle his second year in the league. Plus along with making field goals and extra points, now he needs to learn the new kickoff rule.
