Patriots earn praise from top wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba after meeting
“Definitely would like playing there”
The New England Patriots gained some extra intel on one of the top wide receivers in the 2023 NFL Draft class at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Smith-Njigba, a projected first-round pick, revealed Friday that he met with the Patriots at the combine, said it went well and had nothing but good things to say about the team.
"Bill Belichick, you know what type of franchise program they have over there," Smith-Njigba said, via NESN's Dakota Randall. "Mac Jones, great arm talent, great quarterback. Definitely would like playing there."
Smith-Njigba actually outperformed two 2022 first-round picks, the New Orleans Saints' Chris Olave and the New York Jets' Garrett Wilson, during the 2021 season at Ohio State with 95 catches for 1,606 yards with nine touchdowns out of the slot. He was limited with a hamstring injury during his junior season in 2022, catching just five passes for 43 yards in three games.
Smith-Njigba said Friday that he won't be running a 40-yard dash at the combine but he'll perform other drills. The former Buckeyes star will run the 40-yard dash at Ohio State's pro day.
The Patriots could certainly use a top-tier young wide receiver in their offense with Jakobi Meyers and Nelson Agholor hitting free agency. New England's top wide receivers left on their current roster are Kendrick Bourne, DeVante Parker and Tyquan Thornton.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick did not attend the combine this year, so it's likely Smith-Njigba met with New England front office staffers and positional coaches.
The Patriots have the 14th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
