Defensive end Trey Flowers is back with the New England Patriots five years following his departure to the Detroit Lions and eventual one-year stint with the division-rival Miami Dolphins.

On Tuesday morning, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport broke the news that Flowers is signing with the Patriots after recently working out for them.

The Patriots drafted Flowers out of Arkansas in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft and it didn't take long for him to burst into the scene. After spending his rookie season on IR due to a shoulder injury, Flowers came back with a 7-sack season in 2016 and helped the Patriots on a Super Bowl-winning season.

Flowers' crowning moment came in that Super Bowl as he finished the big game with 2.5 sacks, showing up in high-stakes moments to set up the Patriots' iconic comeback against the Atlanta Falcons.

Flowers would follow Year 2 with a couple of strong seasons, racking up 6.5 sacks in 2017 and 7.5 in 2018.

Now, the veteran arrives in New England at almost 30 years old in a different role. He's to provide depth in a room headlined by Matthew Judon and Josh Uche. In an AFC East where they're expected to finish last, the one thing that the Patriots can count on is their defense.

Belichick's unit finished seventh in the NFL in pressure rate, per Pro Football Reference. It also finished Top 3 in the league in EPA/play allowed, per RBSDM.com

The defensive end will have to turn things around if he's to be a big-time contributor on defense. Flowers has played only 18 games over the last three years with trips to Injured Reserve in each of them. In that span, he's recorded 3.5 sacks and four tackles for loss.
