Prior to his tenure with the New England Patriots, Hunter Henry had experience playing with some other quarterbacks. He spent five seasons with the Las Angeles Chargers, and in his final year, he got the opportunity to share the field with Justin Herbert, who was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Fast forward to 2024, he is now back with another rookie quarterback.
So, on Wednesday, Henry was asked if there are any similarities between Herbert and Maye now that he's gotten the opportunity to play with both of them.
“There’s a lot of similarities in a lot of ways,” Henry explained. “They’re different but similar in a way, too. Justin’s a special player, but Drake is a very special player, too. The size always helps. Drake’s a big guy and Justin is obviously a very big guy. The mobility always helps – being able to create plays on the run. Not just with passing but also with his feet. Yeah, there’s definitely similarities. I’ve been blessed with Justin and now with Drake.”
And for Maye, he takes advantage of Henry's experience, always picking his brain.
“I ask Hunter a bunch of questions,” Maye said. “… He always talks about Herbert, remembering his first start, Hunter said he was real nervous coming out of the huddle and may have thrown his first one in the stands kind of like I did in my first one against the Texans. Other than that, (Herbert’s) arm talent and he’s a great player in this league.”
“He’s had a lot of success. He’s done it with a guy, Philip (Rivers), in San Diego and then with Herbert, guys who have done it at a high level,” Maye added. “He’s seen a lot of different looks. He helps with lining guys up in the huddle. He’s a true vet and one of the best players on our football, so I just try to get him the football.”
As for Henry, he's truly enjoying his time playing with Maye. The tight end has been the Patriots most reliable target this season, and it's clear that the rookie looks for him all the time.
“Drake’s a competitor. Drake’s got a lot of talent. He’s really smart. He continues to grow. It’s fun to grow with him,” Henry said “… I’m not surprised at all. We saw glimpses throughout camp, throughout the spring. They drafted him around here for a reason. He’s a really good football player and will continue to get better."
