FOXBOROUGH, Mass – From guard, to tackle, back to guard again.

That's been Michael Onwenu's experience in the NFL. And in last Sunday's loss to the Dolphins, his versatility was on display once again.

After playing at tackle in the first four games of the season, he was moved back to guard.

"It felt good," Onwenu told A to Z Sports. "First couple of plays took me a minute to settle in, but after, I'll say the first or second series, I was pretty much settled in."

"I'm accustomed to both," he added. "But it had been a while since I played guard, so just getting back to that inside movement."

Throughout training camp, it seemed Onwenu was going to move back to guard after spending the majority of the 2023 season at tackle. However, injuries forced him to move back to the outside.

While he is comfortable playing at both positions, the offensive lineman opened up about the biggest difference he has to adapt to when making the quick switch.

"I think it's just different responsibilities," he explained. "Mostly it's the guards that are pulling or doing most of that. And then in terms of responsibility or anything like that, my matchups are just a little bit more closer or tighter or immediate, pretty much. So just in terms of that with spacing and technique-wise.

Last Friday's media-attended portion of practice was the first time reporters saw Onwenu back at guard since the summer. So when did he find out about the decision?

"I was told, not short notice, but I was told just a few days before the game," Onwenu said. "So I think it was something that worked out eventually. So just building on that and keep doing that."

Now heading into a tough matchup against the Houston Texans, it looks like the Patriots could start the same offensive line as the previous week for the first time this year. And that's vital considering it will also mark rookie quarterback Drake Maye's first start in the NFL.

All signs point to it being Vederian Lowe (left tackle), Michael Jordan (left guard), Nick Leverett (center), Michael Onwenu (right guard), and Demontrey Jacoby (right tackle).

After an impressive 2023 campaign, the Patriots signed Onwenu to a 3-year, $57 million deal during free agency. It was reported soon after he signed that the expectation was for him to start at left tackle, but the coaching staff moved him around a lot in the preseason.

However, he was never worried about making the change.

"As long as I get some practice, I should be ready to go," Onwenu said in August.

Now he's gotten a full week to practice at guard, so let's see what happens on Sunday.
