The playmaker-needy New England Patriots didn’t take any massive swings at their offensive skill groups this offseason, but they do have one more opportunity to hit a home run in the NFL draft.
After replacing running back Damien Harris with James Robinson, wide receivers Jakobi Meyers and Nelson Agholor with JuJu Smith-Schuster and tight end Jonnu Smith with Mike Gesicki, the Patriots seem to be spending a lot of time with highly regarded wide receiver prospects.
One of those is Mississippi wideout Jonathan Mingo, who said at his pro day that he’d be taking a visit to New England.
Mingo is drawing some recent hype after Thursday’s pro day.
Greg Cosell compared Mingo, who’s 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, to Deebo Samuel and A.J. Brown.
Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy tweeted that wide receiver coaches have the former Rebels receiver graded “higher than many being mocked in Round 1.”
Mingo ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine with a 39.5-inch vertical leap, 10-feet, 9-inch broad jump and 22 bench press reps of 225 pounds. He then ran a 4.27-second short shuttle and 7.02-second 3-cone at his pro day.
Mingo caught 51 passes for 861 yards with five touchdowns as a senior in 2022. He also added a rushing touchdown. He wasn’t overly productive in his college career, registering 112 catches for 1,758 yards with 12 touchdowns, but he certainly has a unique blend of size, speed and quick feet.
Mingo is currently listed as a projected fourth-round pick by DraftScout.com but it wouldn’t be a shock if he winds up going on Day 2.
