All eyes are on Drake Maye this training camp, and everyone wants to find out as much about him as possible.
So every player on the team has been asked about their early impressions of the rookie quarterback. That includes Patriots star safety Jabrill Peppers.
Peppers spoke with the media following Friday's training camp session, and was asked about Maye. However, instead of the traditional answer, he went with something a little different.
And it was quite the compliment for Maye.
"I mean, I feel like you guys know everything," Peppers said. "But he got really good taste in music. I didn't expect that from him."
So now we'll just have to figure out exactly what Maye's music choices are.
Along with this fun comment, Peppers did provide his take on what he's seen from Maye.
“He’s a young quarterback facing a defense who’s been together for a while. We play really well off one another,” Peppers added. “We know how to disguise looks and make it look like different things. He’s definitely getting adjusted to it. He has all the qualities – he’s smart, he can make every throw on the field, it’s just about seeing it, believing it, reading it out, and making the right throws day in and day out.”
Maye had arguably his best practice of training camp on Friday, showing a lot of improvement in such a short time. There has been a lot of outside talk about his early struggles, but people forget that it is normal for any rookie.
So what is Maye's mindset throughout camp?
“Just learn from it. Just don’t do the same mistake over and over,” Maye said on Friday. “Also, you come out here on Monday, the first day in pads, and we do third-and-long. Third and long in the NFL is tough. Our defense does a good job in third-and-long and it’s tough on the offense. At the same time, just watching film back, focus on the little things. That’s what this position is. As a quarterback, you have to do the little things right.”
And Jacoby Brissett also prided Maye on how he's conducted himself.
“Keep going, man. It’s a long training camp,” Brissett said. “… The best thing he’s doing is putting one foot in front of the other, going back out there and competing. The plays are going to make themselves. It’s about doing the little things day in and day out that’s going to give you a chance to make the right play.”
But Maye still hasn't shown everything that he is capable of yet. And he made sure to tell everyone that on Friday.
“I feel like I throw the football well down the field,” Maye said. “I still feel like I haven’t really aired it out yet, but I think it’s coming. I’m looking forward to it.”
