FOXBOROUGH, Mass – Rhamondre Stevenson has a huge target on his back after a worrisome habit has become clear throughout the first three games of the season.
In each game, the running back has fumbled. And while the New England Patriots were able to recover the ball in the first two games, the New York Jets came away with it this past Thursday's loss.
Stevenson had a simple message when asked by reporters about this issue after the game.
“I gotta hold the ball,” he said.
But on Wednesday ahead of their Week 4 matchup against the 49ers, quarterback Jacoby Brissett was asked about this. And he made his opinion on the matter clear.
"Unwavering," Brissett said about his confidence in Stevenson. "He's one of the best running backs in the league. I mean, I'm not too worried about that."
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was also asked about this. And his first sentence said it all.
"Look, we always say that ball security is job security," Mayo explained. "And we're all disappointed in really three fumbles, and he understands that."
So the head coach made sure that Stevenson was going to be put under pressure during practice to ensure that this doesn't continue to happen.
"It’s definitely a point of emphasis today. We'll go out there and practice in full pads. Those guys need to be hit and need to get hit," Mayo added. "I would also say that I have confidence in that room as a whole, not just Rhamondre. I think Gibby's (Antonio Gibson) done a good job. (JaMycal) Hasty's ready to go. He prepares like a starter every week. But we have to take care of the ball."
Considering the team's emphasis on the run game, the Patriots need Stevenson to be at his best every game. So hopefully this issue is behind him.
