FOXBORO, Mass. – New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was not shy when handing out praise to one talented receiver who is entering his second year with the team.
After having to sit out for the first few weeks of his rookie season, Tyquan Thornton made his NFL debut in Week 5 of the 2022 season and did not disappoint his QB. The receiver finished the season with 22 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns across 13 games. Thornton also was heavily involved at the Patriots' first open OTAs session.
"Yeah, I think Tyquan, he’s done a really good job just trying to be consistent. I got a chance to work with him in the offseason like a lot of the guys. For me and him, it’s all about communication," Jones said. "I think he has to grow and learn with me and all of the other guys, as well. We’re all in the same boat together but what you see is exactly what you’re going to get. He’s fast, he’s a smart football player. He’s got strong hands. I think it’s really just him continuing to grow that confidence. We’re all working for."
And his final remark is one truly shows how much faith the quarterback has in Thornton.
"He’s going to be a great player for a long time,” Jones said.
Thornton spent four years at Baylor where he played in 47 career games, with 143 receptions for 2,242 yards and 19 touchdowns. Out of college, Thornton was drafted by the Patriots in the second round with the 50th overall pick.
While Thornton had a good showing during the first open OTAs, there is still a lot of time to go until the NFL season begins and the Patriots haven't even begun practicing in pads yet.
