This has not been an easy season for Mac Jones. That much is obvious. And despite getting benched multiple times, things haven't gotten any better each time the third-year quarterback takes the field.

It has now been reported that Bailey Zappe, who has served as the backup for the past two season, will get the start on Sunday. And with that, Jones has now officially been benched for the fifth time this season, but this is the first time that it has happened prior to the game.

And one Patriots reporter provided some more insight into Jones' state of mind after everything that has happened.

Jones has not shied away from taking accountability after each and every game this season. And it's clear to see that it has taken a toll on him.

But he reaffirms to the media each week that he continues to have confidence in himself. And while that might remain true, it seems hard to keep that going in this organization.

With Zappe now officially earning the start, this might finally solidify the end of Jones' time as a starter in New England.
