Rhamondre Stevenson wasn't kidding when he told reporters recently during the offseason program that he and the team were close to an extension.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Patriots and Stevenson reached an agreement on a four-year extension for $36 million, including $17M fully guaranteed.
Rapoport further reported that Stevenson gets an $8M signing bonus and a total of $12M available in incentives based on reaching at least 1,400 yards and becoming a Pro Bowler or All-Pro.
Moreover, Schefter added that this will now give the star running back the opportunity to "chase down the Patriots all-time leading rusher title."
He is currently 3,188 yards away from catching Sam Cunningham, who is currently the all-time franchise leader with 5,453 yards.
Stevenson gets a decent pay day, while also cutting what can be considered to be a team-friendly deal. Running backs such as Christian McCaffrey, Saquon Barkley, and Josh Jacobs will all make more, as Stevenson is set to become the NFL's seventh highest paid running back on a per-year basis. However, his deal is still more than Derrick Henry and Tony Pollard's.
Stevenson was entering the final year of his deal, having a total of 3,047 yards and 15 touchdowns across his three years.
And the team announced the news in a very simple, but perfect way.
Stevenson was one of the key players that both head coach Jerod Mayo and director of player personnel Eliot Wolf emphasized as a priority to re-sign. And they got the deal done early, with nothing to worry about once training camp comes around.
Stevenson isn't the only player to get a big extension this past season, with the team having emphasized bringing back homegrown talent.
Stevenson joins safety Kyle Dugger, offensive tackle Mike Onwenu, defensive lineman Christian Barmore, and linebacker Anferenee Jennings with the extensions, while the team also brought back veteran tight end Hunter Henry and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne.
So far everything that Wolf and Mayo said they planned to do, they have gotten done. But there are a still a few more things remaining on the list, so let's see if they can keep this perfect trend going.
