The New England Patriots stunned the NFL by cutting both QB Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham as a part of yesterday's cut-down day. Now, less than 24 hours later, the Patriots are re-signing both to the practice squad, according to the Boston Globe's Doug Kyed.
"Zappe fever" was a term coined by the media following his fill-in for the injured Mac Jones. Zappe went 2-0 in the two games he started and threw five touchdowns to three interceptions in the four games he appeared in.
Cunningham caught fans' attention with his change-of-pace ability that sparked a sputtering offense in week one of the preseason. He spent most of the offseason training as a wide receiver and offers positional versatility due to his athletic upside.
It is still unclear who their backup QB will be. According to Boston Sports Journal's Mike Giardi, the Patriots' preference remains to bring in a veteran QB to be the backup to Mac Jones.
