The New England Patriots knew that this news was coming, but it was just made official on Monday.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins has confirmed that the Bengals have placed the franchise tag on him for the second straight year.

They did this in an effort to get a long-term deal done with Higgins after the more than $26M tag.

Higgins was expected to be the Patriots main target in free agency, but this move changed things. New England will now focus their efforts elsewhere to bring in a star receiver.

Higgins finished the 2024 season with 73 receptions for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns. And now he will be back with Joe Burrow next season.

However, there is a slim chance the Bengals could decide to trade him if they can't get a deal done, and it's expected that New England will have a lot of interest in that case.

Along with Higgins, the Patriots are reportedly also not expected to land Seahawks receiver D.K. Metcalf, as Seattle intends to keep the receiver for the final season of his three-year, $72 million deal.

The Patriots have a league-leading $127.7 million in available cap money to spend when free agency begins on Mar. 12.
