While fans have been waiting for the Patriots to bring in an official general manager, this latest report is a step in the right direction.
According to multiple sources, the Patriots are hiring Alonzo Highsmith as a front office executive. He does not have an official job title yet.
He most recently has been serving as the general manager for the University of Miami, but has experience in the NFL.
A 1987 first round pick, Highsmith played with the Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers until 1992.
He took a break from football, but then returned as a senior personnel executive in 2012 with the Green Bay Packers. In 2018, he made the jump to the Cleveland Browns, becoming the vice president of player personnel.
That lasted for two seasons before he moved to the Seattle Seahawks in the personnel department. And then in 2022 he made the jump to college.
But now he's back in the league.
Highsmith also has experience working with Eliot Wolf, who for all intents and purpose, is serving as the general manger at the moment. And this latest hire further proves that.
This is the fourth hire that has a connection to Wolf, with new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, offensive assistant Ben McAdoo, and defensive line coach Jeremy Montgomery having worked with him in Green Bay.
Let's see what Highsmith can do.
