The New England Patriots kicked off the first set of their annual joint practices, and while the results were shaky, the rookie receivers continue to shine.
Receiver Kayshon Boutte started practice off strong by recording four catches. Mac Jones is developing good chemistry with him, as they successfully connected downfield. After that, Boutte continued to impress with a positive gain, this time from Zappe.
The team is hoping that Boutte can recapture his freshman college season magic and put it all together in the NFL. Once widely regarded as a first-round pick, Boutte slipped to the sixth round following injury issues and a poor combine. Over the last several practices, Boutte has started to heat up and is seeing increased reps with Mac Jones.
In the first preseason game, we got to see some of Boutte. He ran 19 routes but was pretty limited, only recording two catches for seven yards. To Boutte's credit, the offense was severely hindered by the struggling offensive line, which didn't allow any of the receivers to do much outside of short catch and runs.
The other sixth-round pick, Demario Douglas, has been the star of training camp, and that continued into day one of joint practices. Despite his impressive performance during training camp, Douglas only ran one route in last Thursday's preseason game. Belichick did say that the players who got the least reps in practice would see the most reps in the game, so that tracks. However, everyone is itching to see him get actual in-game experience. This Saturday's preseason game could be our first chance to watch him in action.
